Catherine Tyree and BEC Lorenzo Save Best for Last to Win CSI5* $73,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Classic

Wellington, Fla. – Feb. 23, 2020 – The final day of Week Seven’s competition at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) kicked off Sunday, February 23 with the CSI5* $73,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Classic taking place in the International Arena of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. As the second 5* installment of the CaptiveOne Advisors series, 49 horse-and-rider combinations took to the ring in hopes of capturing the winning title and the lion’s share of the money. Adding a 5* win to their resume, USA’s Catherine Tyree and BEC Lorenzo put in two unbeatable rides that led them to the top of the ranks in the CSI5* $73,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Classic.

Course designer Santiago Varela (ESP) set the ambitious track comprised of 16 well-built jumps and a 77-second time-allowed. A majority of athletes and their horses fell victim to the challenging obstacles, many of which rolled a rail over the final jump of the course, a wide set oxer headed towards the in-gate. Sergio Alvarez Moya (ESP) and Charmeur were the first to navigate the first round track without faults, making themselves the pathfinders of the course in a time of 74.48 seconds. Jorge Matte Capdevila (CHI) and Jordan Coyle (IRL) were quick to recreate the fault-free ride of Alvarez Moya, forcing a jump-off to take place following the first round. A long dry-spell of clear rides was finally broken by World No. 2 Martin Fuchs (SUI), followed by another clear performance from Alvarez Moya, this time with Kardenta Van’t Meerhof. Additionally, Daniel Coyle (IRL) and Tyree (USA) joined the exclusive jump-off list.

The seven combinations moved on to contend for the jump-off. Six obstacles made up the shortened track with a time-allowed of 48 seconds. First to try their hand at the new course was Alvarez Moya aboard his own Charmeur. The pair logged 4 faults and a time of 38.952 seconds on the scoreboard. Immediately following, Matte Capdevila piloted Destiny Van Schore to a clean round, leaving all of the fences intact and challenging the remaining riders to go clear and beat his time of 46.889 seconds. However, it was not long until Jordan Coyle jumped ahead of Matte Capdevila, shaving 7 seconds off of the leading time to take over the top spot in 39.982 seconds. The pressure was on as Fuchs entered the arena aboard Stalando 2, owned by Andrzej Oplatek, and the seasoned veteran tackled the course with ease to put himself ahead of the pack in 37.921 seconds. As the last duo to attempt the track, Tyree rode a flawless round aboard her very own BEC Lorenzo, tripping the timers in 37.398 to clinch the win.

Catherine Tyree and BEC Lorenzo

Twenty-seven-year-old Tyree has been partnered with BEC Lorenzo since February of 2018.  Together, the pair achieved great success in 2019 with the help of long-time trainers Missy Clark and John Brennan of North Run, claiming the top spot in the $50,000 Rushy Marsh Farm Grand Prix CSI2* at WEF, the $25,000 Tryon Resort Grand Prix at the Tryon International Equestrian Center and the $36,000 Devon Speed Derby CSI4* at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. Only one week prior to Sunday’s class, the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding jumped his first 5* class at the Palm Beach Masters. BEC Lorenzo showed no hint of inexperience Sunday, claiming his first win with Tyree for the 2020 WEF season. Tyree and BEC Lorenzo will contend for the $137,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Champions Series Final during Week Eleven of WEF.

Martin Fuchs and Stalando 2

A new mount for Fuchs, Stalando 2 earned himself a second top-two 5* finish for Week Seven of WEF. Earlier in the week, the 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding won the $137,000 Equinimity WEF Challenge Cup Round VII CSI5* with Fuchs. Stalando 2 showed no sign of being new to the No. 2 ranked rider in the World and Fuchs is excited about bringing his new partner back into the arena for competition during Week Nine and Eleven.

Daniel Coyle and Farrel

Irish rider Daniel Coyle rounded out the top three with a time of 38.607 seconds on 10-year-old Warmblood gelding Farrel. Coyle gained the ride on Ariel Grange’s Farrel in 2018 from Great Britain’s James Billington. Coyle and Farrel have ridden to many top-three finishes at the 4* and 5* level, including their win in the $145,000 Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Vancouver CSI4*-W at Thunderbird Show Park in August of 2019.

Week Seven of the WEF will conclude Sunday with the CSI2* $50,000 Dutta Corp/Guido Klatte class in the International Ring immediately following the Parade of Champions. Week Eight will begin Wednesday, February 26, bringing new and returning competitors back to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The CaptiveOne Series will conclude during Week Eleven, during which the $137,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Classic Final CSI4* will take place under the lights Saturday night in the International Arena.

FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Catherine Tyree – $73,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Classic CSI5* winner

On the first round course:
“I think Santiago [Varela] wasn’t joking today – he has built really great courses all week. They have been technical and challenging. I think that right off the bat you had your first question going into the triple combination. It’s a little bit of an awkward line. The plank caught a lot of people off guard, and then it was all about rideability and making sure that you had enough power but still being able to give your horse a chance at the jumps. I was lucky that I had two horses and I was able to go around on one and then fix my mistakes from that round and really try to be there for BEC Lorenzo and give him the best chance to jump a clear round, and he was really great.”

On the jump-off:
“I was able to watch everyone in the jump-off which was really nice. I had a plan and to be honest, the first three jumps did not go how I wanted them to. I knew that for the last three jumps I really had to gallop and stay on it and there was an inside turn that I really didn’t think would present itself, but given that I was going and pulling in the beginning, I knew that to save any sort of results I needed to try to do it. [BEC Lorenzo] was great – he was not phased, not surprised, was just looking to the next jump”

On her partnership with BEC Lorenzo:
“I bought him at the end of his 7-year-old year, so I have had him for 2 years now. He jumped his first 2* grand prix down here last year and his first 1.50m class, and he actually just jumped his first 5* grand prix last week at Deeridge [at the Palm Beach Masters]. Every time that you ask him a big question, he exceeds all expectations that I have. To have him as a partner and to know that I can go and jump a lot of big classes and he is going to be there for me is really great. He is such a fighter and really loves doing what he does which is really nice. I really wanted to correct a few things from last week at the smaller height today and be there for him, to get him comfortable, and he was ready to go.”

On her future plans with BEC Lorenzo:
“He has a few weeks off now and then I think I’m going to jump him in the [$137,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Champions Series Final] during Week Eleven under the lights to get more experience doing that. From there, we just see how the summer plays out. I will for sure aim him for some 3* and 4* grand prix classes this summer and it goes fast, so everything will come up and before we know it we will be back here [at WEF] next year. I know that I can slot him into my string for some of the Saturday night grand prix classes and 5* classes which are really nice to have because there was a point where I didn’t quite know where he was going to end up but I always knew that he was going to be really competitive.”

On training with Missy Clark and John Brennan at North Run:
“After indoors this year I took the horses into my own care and I kind of run things by myself but John and Missy train me at the ring. I’ve been with since I was 18 years old, and yes they are my trainers but they are a big part of my life and a big part of everything that I have done and bringing [BEC Lorenzo] along. They found him, they helped me get him here and for that, I am always going to be forever grateful and they have taught me everything that I know. I am also so lucky to have my amazing grooms, Kristen Chandler Virginie Bernard, by my side.”
