New Tryon Facility Rescues WEG 2018

© file: Tryon Equestrian Center
The FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2018 will be held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina (USA) from 10 to 23 September 2018. The FEI Bureau today unanimously agreed that the Games should be awarded to Tryon, meaning that the FEI’s flagship event remains in North America, following the withdrawal of Bromont (CAN) earlier this year.

The original dates for the Games (12-26 August) have been changed following two scientific studies commissioned by the FEI which stated that climatic conditions would be significantly more favourable in North Carolina during September, particularly from a horse welfare perspective. The FEI also looked at date clashes with other fixtures on the FEI Calendar to ensure the optimum timeslot for the 2018 Games.

According to Billy Glass, this year was his final year at the Capital Challenge. Glass, along with Oliver Kennedy created one of the nation’s finest and most important horse show nearly two decades ago, a show that continued to grow in popularity in every year of its existence. It is now a massive 10 day production that draws competitors from almost every state in the Union.

Kennedy told me, “I’ll be working with a silent partner that has come aboard.”

Glass said he’s looking for some “down time” after a great run at Capital Challenge.

Palm Beach County Warning Flags are Up for Massive Shark Migration

© wire: sharks_off_singer_islandThousands of sharks of the coast of Singer Island

The Palm Beacher reports …….While it’s 30 times more likely to get struck by lightning than be bitten by a shark, swimmers should still take caution, since hundreds of blacktip and spinner sharks have been spotted near northern Singer Island.

Because the sharks have been caught migrating closer to shore than they typically do, experts are warning beachgoers to be on the lookout.

George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville told the Palm Beach Post that “there are an average of 20 to 25 shark bites a year off the coast of Florida with a large majority involving blacktips.”

While Palm Beach County has had no fatal shark attacks between the years of 1882 and 2012, people are still encouraged to be on the lookout for sharks when they see a purple flag flying at the beach.

In an interview in Horse and Hounds, Nick Skelton revealed that it was US rider Laura Kraut who discovered Olympic Gold Medalist, Big Star. Skelton was quoted as saying, “I wouldn’t have found him if it hadn’t been for Laura [Kraut]. She was heading to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the US team went for training at a little country show in Holland. She arrived at 8am and saw this five-year-old jumping in the ring with an American rider called Alan Waldman,” Skelton explained. “She thought ‘Christ, this is the most amazing horse I’ve ever seen’ and went running up to Alan to ask if his horse was for sale. He said yes, but that he wanted him to go to someone really good because he thought Big Star was the best horse he’d ever had. Laura rang me and said you’d better get over here quick to see this horse, and that was it.”

Saugerties, NY (October 24, 2016): HITS, Inc. is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the 2016 Medium Business of the Year Award of Excellence by the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership (CEP). The winners were announced at the exCEPtional mornings breakfast on October 19, 2016.

The annual Awards of Excellence program honors businesses for their significant role in supporting the business community and driving economic growth. The award is divided into three categories: small business, medium business and large business, which correlates with the number of full time employees at the respective company. Award categories also include: Manufacturer of the Year,© file: Marion County Start-Up of the Year and Non-Profit of the Year.

“How appropriate that in the Horse Capital of the World, one of our business Awards of Excellence winners is a leading equine company. HITS has demonstrated excellence throughout their business practices and community involvement, which is why we are so fortunate for them to be a part of our community,” said Kevin T. Sheilley, President & CEO of the Ocala/Marion County Chamber & Economic Partnership.

To be considered for an Award of Excellence, the organization must be setting the standards for excellence through innovation, sustainability, employment growth and development, customer service, financial success, and community involvement.

“HITS is thrilled with this recognition from the Ocala/Marion CEP,” said HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri. “Our clients build their lives around the sport, and there is no better home-away-from-home for these riders and trainers than Ocala, Florida—horsemen prefer Ocala. We are grateful to the CEP and to the community for their unwavering support and acknowledgment of our business in the Horse Capital of the World.”

Four-story apartments removed from Devon Yard project

© file: Devon Yard
Daily Local News reports….In a brief presentation updating the evolving plans for the proposed Devon Yard project on the site of the former Waterloo Gardens in Devon, the multi-family housing units that were to sit just west of the Devon Horse Show grounds have been eliminated, it was announced during a brief Easttown Township Planning Commission meeting last week. A more detailed meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m., Oct. 25 at Beaumont Elementary School.

Along with the four-story apartment building that was to be constructed, there will no longer be a parking structure with the building. Surface parking would now be on the site that is located between the Waterloo Gardens site and the horse show grounds.

With the fight over the apartment building now settled, developer Eli Kahn can continue to develop the remaining parts of the project that includes “… a large-format Anthropologie store, Terrain garden center, and Terrain Cafe, alongside award-winning chef, Marc Vetri’s Amis and Pizzeria Vetri.
