Martien Van Der Hoeven Takes Home a Blue Ribbon in $5,000 Open Jumper Speed at Kentucky Summer Classic

Lexington, Ky – August 1, 2017 –  Martien Van Der Hoeven wasted no time in making sure that he had a successful week at the Kentucky Summer Classic. The professional topped the list of competitors in the $5,000 Open Jumper 1.40m Speed class aboard Corleone on Tuesday afternoon at the Kentucky Horse Park. During the morning classes, David Beisel continued his winning streak from last week by winning the 7-year-old Young Jumpers with Harlow Investments’ For Sunday.

For Van Der Hoeven, traveling to Kentucky from his home base at Augusta Pines Farm, 30 minutes outside of Houston, Texas, is always a big undertaking. The professional has had a successful string of shows at the Kentucky Horse Park over the years and he appreciates the opportunity to compete in such an iconic venue. Last week during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, Van Der Hoeven had several top placing in both the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and the $50,000 Rood and Riddle Grand Prix on his grey gelding Zerro Leone. During the Kentucky Summer Classic, Van Der Hoeven is showing the 10-year-old KWPN gelding Corleone who is owned by Mary and Catherine Tyree and normally is trained by North Run Stables from Warren, Vermont. Van der Hoeven credits the great training Corleone receives at North Run with his ability to take over the mount with such success.

Another winner in Rolex Stadium during competition on Tuesday was David Beisel and For Sunday, a 7-year-old KWPN mare owned by Harlow Investment Enterprises. The pair won the 7-Year-Old Developing Jumper class, presented by Spy Coast Farm. Beisel believes deeply in the value of the Developing Jumper Series and has even used it to train one of his current grand prix mounts, Ammeretto, to success in the grand prix ring. In 2016, For Sunday won the Young Jumper Championship Midwestern League Finals and Beisel is hopeful for a repeat performance from the mare this year.

The second week of showing in the Kentucky Summer Series will continue tomorrow with hunter and jumper competition at the Kentucky Horse Park. Show Jumping competitors will have the opportunity to win earn points for the Hagyard Challenge Series as well as the Envisian Leading Riders award that is presented at the end of each week of competition.

FROM THE WINNERS CIRCLE

Martien Van Der Hoeven – $5,000 Open Jumper 1.40m Speed class winner

On his round:
“I was happy with it and Corleone was good. He stayed fast, prompt and careful. I thought it was a nice course and it worked out well for us.”

On Corleone:
“He is owned by Mary and Catherine Tyree and I was fortunate enough that John Brennan and Missy Clark from North Run left him here with me to ride and compete while they were in Europe for the summer. The opportunity to get to ride and show him here while they were gone is very nice for me. He’s a good horse, he’s careful with a big stride. He’s very well broke and right there underneath you the whole time.”

On Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC:
“They are very reliable and it’s run very professionally. Being from Houston, Texas, it’s bit of a hike but we know what we’re getting when we get here. Hugh and the rest of the staff, JP, and everybody from the office to the in-gate guys – they just make it an experience that you can count on.”

David Beisel – 7-Year-Old Developing Jumper class, presented by Spy Coast Farm, winner

On For Sunday’s performances:
“Last week she was second in the first class, won the second class, and then she had two down on Saturday. She’s a quirky little horse and I do need to work on ride ability, but last week I think I over emphasized that lesson and that is why I had two down on Saturday.  It’s funny, she’s a little horse and she needs to be fiery and just gallop and that is when she goes her best.”

On Harlow Investments, LLC:
“For Sunday is owned by Harlow Investments, Phyllis Harlow and Harlow Investment Enterprises. They bred her on their farm in Ocala and she grew up there until she was 4.  I’ve had her for the last three years and I just think the world of her. Harlow Investments also owns the grey horse I rode in the Grand Prix so it is a great partnership that we are very proud.”

On The Spy Coast Young Jumper Series
“It’s just a wonderful program! Amaretto, the horse that won the $50,000 Rood and Riddle Grand Prix, came through the Young Jumpers series and I think it’s just a great way to develop the horses.  The experience that they gain being able to jump in the stadium in invaluable and plays a big part in them being able to move up comfortably as an 8 and 9-year-old. I try to support this program as much as I can!”

Professional Hunters Kick Off Second Week of Kentucky Summer Horse Show

As the second week of the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows begins at the Kentucky Horse Park, professional hunter competitors are eager to secure a division championship. During Tuesday morning’s combined Green Hunter 3’9 and High Performance class, three different horse and rider combinations earned blue ribbons, so the division will be up for grabs when it concludes on Wednesday.

In the first over fences class of the division, Samantha Schaefer and the 8-year-old KWPN gelding In the Know, who is owned by her sister, Madeline Schaefer, came away with the win. The pair arrived early in Kentucky from Westminster, Maryland, to prepare for the Pre-Green Incentive and International Derby Finals later in August. Other top hunters took their turn in the beautiful Stonelea Ring and coming into second place in the first over fences was Erica Quinn aboard CF Partners’ Celtic Fire, a 10-year-old KWPN stallion. Emma Wujek and Raylyn Farms, Inc.’s RF Remarkable, an 8-year-old Oldenburg gelding, received the yellow ribbon.

After returning to the ring for the second over fences, Quinn and Celtic Fire topped the leaderboard. Early in 2016, Celtic Fire was competing in grand prixs, but they decided he would flourish in the derby ring. After only four months of hunter training, the pair won the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Chicago Hunter Derby in 2016. Quinn, who is based in Brookeville, Maryland, wanted to use this week at the Kentucky Horse Summer Show as experience to get ready for the international hunter derby later in two weeks.

For the under saddle class, Brandon Gibson won with Lisa Chaney’s Cristal, 7-year-old Westphalian mare. Quinn and Celtic Fire placed second and Schaefer on In The Know, rounded out the top three.

On Wednesday, the professional hunter divisions will wrap up, and additional championships will be awarded later this week to the top Amateur-Owner, Junior and Children’s Hunters. Additional hunter highlights include the $5,000 World Equestrian Center/Kentucky Horse Shows USHJA National Hunter Derby on Saturday in the Stonelea Ring.

IN THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Erica Quinn – Combined Green Hunter 3’9 & High Performance class, second over fences winner

On Celtic Fire:
“He was super. I think today was two of our most consistent rounds back to back. He was a jumper for a little over a year ago, and we turned him into a hunter. He’s been doing great ever since! He’s really light across the ground, his canter so consistent and rhythmic, and he always makes a really nice effort at the jump. He’s beautiful. I’m happy to get to ride him!”

On training young horses:
“I love seeing the improvement and the progression that the green horses make. From where he was a year ago until now, I love to see the growth and progression.”

Samantha Schaefer – Combined Green Hunter 3’9 & High Performance class, first over fences winner

On In The Know:
“I thought it went really well this morning and overall, I’m really happy with how he went. He jumped nicely. I think I was the only one who jumped 4’ in the combined class, and he’s only 8-year-old, but he does it so easily and in good style. He always tries really hard.”

On the Kentucky Horse Summer Shows:
“So far, I love Kentucky! The footing is perfect, the weather has been great, and the jumps are beautiful. They do a wonderful job managing and keeping everything organized — the management works so well together.”
