Tanner Korotkin and Armagedon Capture Second Round of Junior Jumper Championship at Devon Horse Show

Devon, Pa. – May 24, 2019 – Under the lights in the Dixon Oval, 17-year-old Tanner Korotkin of Wellington, Florida, and Sandalwood Farms’ Armagedon claimed round two, sponsored by Land Services USA, Inc., of the coveted Junior Jumper championship to conclude competition on Friday at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair. The pair were the first clear pathfinders in the jump-off, ultimately crossing the finish line in an unbeatable 32.383 seconds to claim the Wigg’s Bar Challenge Trophy.

Following Thursday’s round one speed competition, won by Caelinn Leahy and Dymendy, 22 junior riders returned to compete over Brazil’s Guilherme Jorge’s first round track, where seven finished clear to advance to the jump-off.

Qualifying for the jump-off on Armagedon, his first of two mounts in the first round, Korotkin piloted the 14-year-old KWPN gelding to an early lead as only the second pair to tackle the short course, which held for the remainder of the class.

The only other two combinations able to produce double-clear rounds were Graciela Robert and Paige Matthies.

Robert and Rose Hill Farm’s Fineman followed Korotkin in the order and stopped the timers just two seconds off the leading pace in 34.350 seconds.

Fresh off her win earlier in the day in the prestigious R.W. “Ronnie” Mutch Equitation Championship, sponsored by Dover Saddlery, Matthies and Barbara Smith’s Climbus achieved the final faultless performance of the tie-breaking round in 33.454 seconds to slide in front of Robert and secure runner-up honors, while Robert settled for third place.

In 2018, Matthies took home the top prize in the second round of the Junior Jumper championship at the Devon Horse Show on her other mount Dirkie Z, however, this year was Climbus’ time to shine, helping her earn another top placing in the competitive division.

The $20,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Junior Jumper Classic will be held on Saturday, May 25, in the Dixon Oval at 7 p.m., where the 2019 Devon Horse Show Junior Jumper champion will be crowned.

FROM THE WINNER’S CIRCLE

Tanner Korotkin – $3,750 Junior Jumper (second round), sponsored by Land Services USA, Inc., winner

On winning at the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair:
“Devon is such a prestigious show. Yesterday wasn’t my best day. I had two down on both of my horses but then my horse, Armagedon, came out here today and really jumped amazing and tried his hardest. We decided before we went in to just keep a nice, cool, collected ride and be as tight as possible and he could not have jumped better. Last year was my first time at Devon and it was definitely a great experience for me. I gained a lot of experience in the equitation ring and in the jumper ring. Jumpers last year were not that great for me so it feels great to come back and redeem myself.”

On Friday’s courses:
“I thought the course wasn’t too technical and not too big. Overall it was a very good course. In the jump-off, I did the eight strides to the double and then after the double I was very, very tight to the oxer. I think I definitely got it on the tight turn to number three.”

On his plans for the summer:
“I just graduated high school and will be going to Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, so I can keep riding with my dad, Alan Korotkin. For the rest of the summer, I’m going to be going to Country Heir for two weeks with my horses competing in the equitation and hopefully some of the night grand prix classes and then we’ll be going to Lake Placid and [the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival]. I’m really looking forward to it.”
